Wondering why your Slaves are fairly happy with their lot, whilst the freemen on your estate are misery incarnate?
That’d be because what they want to buy is likely well beyond their means (if even available)...
Paid £1 per Chronum, in Spring and Autumn they want relatively modest requirements of 1 Food, 1 Meat and 1 Beer. In Winter they also want Clothing, but in Summer they want clothing and replace the meat with fish.
Based on the normal yield of production for Taura, the average cost for an Estate to produce* at Normal Yield;
Food (All Year): Grain 0.08 or Meat 0.14 or Fish 0.43
Meat (Autumn to Spring): 0.14
Beer (All Year): 0.08
Fish (Summer): Fish 0.43
Clothing (Summer & Winter): Cloth 1, Fur 0.77
[*yield/wages paid]
In Spring and Autumn then, the cost to produce their requirements is Grain 0.08, Beer 0.08 and Meat 0.14 = 0.3….so the Freeman would have pocketed £0.7 left over after pay each Chronum.
In Winter, the freeman also wants clothing – buying Furs at 0.77 means his outlay is now £1.07/Chronum
In Summer, the freeman wants fish over meat: this costs 0.29 more than meat, pushing the outlay up to £1.36/Chronum
A good year on Taura the freeman will experience just one Summer and 3 of each other season: Net income will be 10, Net outgoings would be 6.37. A bad year (with 3 summers and winters) would be 11.57
The Slave on the other hand, wants Food and Drink and then Clothing each winter. Through Spring to Autumn they could in theory buy Grain 0.08 + Beer 0.08 – though as they buy after Freemen it would more likely be Meat (0.14) or even Fish (0.43) and Mead (0.14).
Assuming they buy Fish and Mead, they would save £0.43 per Chronum until Winter where they most likely have to pay for Cloth at 1 (furs having been bought up). In a good year they will have spent 6.7 and a bad year with three winters 8.7
These costs are based on the Normal Yields for Taura. Different worlds will have better yields and therefore a lower production cost, and obviously some Regions produce goods at the Rich Yield so can undercut the normal price.
However, they are also production costs and with the assumption of 100% efficiency. Estates will likely wish to make a profit on their produce so in Spring or Autumn, its actually unlikely the Freeman can afford to buy everything he wants for the pay that they get.
This implies that if you want freemen to remain freemen, don’t tax unless every Estate on the planet has been particularly modest with their sale prices....and even then only if you've had more Spring and Autumns than Summers and Winters.
…and for Estates that produce Mead, you’d best hope slavery is not outlawed as there won’t be any market left for you sell to!....indeed abolishing slavery would result in a massive drop in produce for everyone.
That’d be because what they want to buy is likely well beyond their means (if even available)...
