I may have missed it,but I cannot find the amount of troops I own.
I've just created an army and a unit with 100 soldiers as I know I recruit a number of those each turn, but a total of all troops would be nice.
Also on a related note. Can any troop type crew starships? In fact can ships move without crew?

Go to your Legate character, then your Army tab, then Unit Tab. Will show you your current army unit amount.

As well as in an army, you will have troops on your estate.
Go to Estates/Inventory and you should be able to view military hardware amongst the trade goods and ores you've produced. You should have 100 light tanks, 100 defence bunkers and (assuming you have an active barracks) a number of soldiers.

Starships are piloted by a Captain (character) and other characters may act as Lieutenants. There may also be novices onboard serving under the Captain as Ensigns (via the apprenticeship system).
As long as a starship has a Captain, it can receive orders.
There are no crew items as such. However, marines in cargo (using bunk mission sections) will defend your ship from boarding attempts.

on that note - can soldiers perform an anti-boarding role (albeit with less effectiveness)?

No, soldiers are useless in boarding battles. Just don't have the training to do the job.
