After first petitioning away 2 sons, and now assassinating the earl I'd expected the one final son from the de Clifford house to become earl (and leave his legate position)...instead the house has collapsed with the countess joining house rath with the earldom.

What! What luck Baron Toledo, I'm sorry to hear that. Bad luck! Good thing there are still some Ancients around to be taken care of! I also saw that Emissary Dana Akatosh was taken prison by the Dacre's, I suppose my attempt to assassinate one of their members put them on high alert and found Dana Akatosh.

ooc....just wondering if this is a bug?
I expected Tiebaut, Legate of House De Clifford Guards Army to have inherited the Earldom - as the next in line to the De Clifford House. Is it possible that being Legate has made the inheritance skip?
....ah actually I think I see what happened. One of the characters I petitioned (Gieffrinnet) moved to House Rath and he was next in line.....but surely if someone defects from a House they would give up their claim too?
Also, are petitions weighted so that characters are more likely to join the petitioners house?

ooc,
I'm not sure, I would assume if they are a Legate, specially House Guards, they give up their claim to earldom.
However,I'm with you, if you petitioned Gief, he should have came to you, Unless it's some kind of Trust issue or he saw Rath had more honor?(not sure if true or not). I haven't messed with Peitions yet so Not sure how thats supposed to work.

OOC,
This is posted up on the wiki,
Loyalty may not be greater than 100% and if it is reduced to 20% or below, the character has a chance of leaving their house every chronum. Characters that leave their house will join another random house in their region (or world). Their loyalty to their new house will be 100%.
So I don't think it was a bug that he moved over to Rath, not sure on the Earldom part though..

Yeah I know there was a risk characters under petition would not necessarily go to the petitioners house, but would be interesting to know if I put the time in to petition then Id like to think the character is inclined towards my house.
The bigger question is about the inheritance. As it implies that petitioning the first Male heir of each house will effectively mean the house gives up its sovereignty to the house the heir moves to when the current baron snuffs it.
That said not begrudging house rath the earldom - its a playtest and was something to be discovered

The rightful heir can indeed belong to another house. As you have rightly surmised, your petitions were effective in causing the rightful heir to abandon his house and join House Rath. Whereupon, hearing the news of his father's death he claimed his inheritance which is not dependent on his current house, only his bloodline. Now House Rath has to work out how to deal with an uppity Earl who is not their Baron Protecting the rightful heir from nefarious plots is a must for any noble house. Losing control of the bloodline is the primary way of losing the game besides losing your last estate. There are a number of ways to do this of course.

And yes, Earldoms are inheritable and only lost if the title holder's house ceases to exist by losing their last estate.
As your assassination shifted the title of Earl to another house, this has changed the dynamic of the region somewhat. Be interesting to see how it resolved as the bloodline of the Earl is not the same as the house he is currently loyal to.
